Shopify maintenance in India costs the plan (₹1,499, ₹5,599 or ₹22,680 a month on yearly billing for Basic, Grow and Advanced), Shopify's 2% to 0.6% fee on prepaid orders, your apps, theme upkeep and developer time. Everything except developer time shows up on your Shopify bills and is easy to total. Developer time is the line that varies, and published price lists for it disagree widely. Budget it from your own change requests over the last three months, then choose hourly billing, a block of hours or a monthly retainer to match. Hosting, SSL and PCI compliance already come with the plan, so never pay for them twice.
What Shopify maintenance costs each month
Shopify maintenance cost is the sum of four lines: the plan and its transaction fees, apps, theme upkeep and developer time. Three of them are printed on your Shopify bills. The fourth, developer time, depends on how much your store changes and who does the work, and it is the one that quotes disagree about.
| Line | What it covers | Where to find your number |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify plan | Hosting, checkout, admin, platform security | Settings, Billing in the admin |
| Transaction fees | Shopify's fee on payments through a third-party gateway | Your past Shopify bills |
| Apps | Recurring, usage-based and one-time app charges | Past bills, plus separate one-time invoices |
| Theme upkeep | Theme updates, and redoing code edits that do not carry over | Online Store, Themes, and your developer's change log |
| Developer time | Fixes, changes, sale preparation, integration upgrades | Your own request history (method below) |
Published figures for the whole bundle are too far apart to budget from. Shopify's own enterprise article on website maintenance cost, last updated in April 2024, puts an ecommerce website at $1,500 to $2,500 a month and a custom ecommerce website at $2,000 to $5,000. An Indian agency's March 2026 price guide lists maintenance for a basic Shopify store at ₹2,000 to ₹6,000 a month and for Shopify Plus at ₹20,000 to ₹50,000. Both are averages over stores that look nothing like each other. Your own number comes from adding up the lines.
What your Shopify plan already pays for
On Shopify, hosting, the SSL certificate and PCI compliance come with the plan, so a maintenance quote should never charge for them again. Shopify's article states that hosting on Shopify includes unlimited bandwidth, Level 1 PCI compliance and an SSL certificate.
This is the biggest difference from WordPress and WooCommerce, where the store owner pays someone to patch the server, update the core software and plugins, renew certificates and scan for malware. Annual maintenance contracts (AMCs) are often priced around that work. If a Shopify quote lists hosting, server monitoring, SSL renewal, core updates or server malware scans, it was written for a different platform, and those lines can be struck out.
What the plan costs is public. These are the figures on Shopify's India pricing page on 3 November 2026:
| Plan | Billed yearly, per month | Billed monthly | Shopify fee on gateway payments |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | ₹1,499 | ₹1,994 | 2% |
| Grow | ₹5,599 | ₹7,447 | 1% |
| Advanced | ₹22,680 | ₹30,164 | 0.6% |
| Plus | Not listed | From ₹1,75,000 | 0.2% |
The fee applies to prepaid orders paid through a gateway such as Razorpay. Cash on delivery is a manual payment, and Shopify's help page on manual payments states that you are not charged third-party transaction fees for those. A store on Grow, billed yearly, with ₹5 lakh of prepaid sales a month pays ₹5,599 for the plan and ₹5,000 in Shopify fees, before the gateway's own charge. If the fee line is large, the plan itself may be wrong, and our guide on which Shopify plan to pick in India works out the break-even points.
Apps and theme upkeep are the lines that creep
Apps and theme work grow quietly because no single charge looks large. Total them from three months of bills, because one bill understates both.
Apps
Shopify's help page on app charges describes three kinds. Recurring charges run on each app's own 30-day cycle, which can differ from Shopify's. Usage-based charges depend on volume and can split one app's cycle across two bills. One-time purchases appear on separate invoices, away from your regular bill. Add all three for the last three months and divide by three to get the real monthly figure.
Apps also create developer work: script conflicts after an update, a widget that breaks the layout, an app that stops being supported. One date matters this quarter. Shopify's developer changelog says public apps still on non-expiring offline access tokens must migrate before 1 January 2027 or be delisted from the App Store, and from 1 April 2027 their affected Admin API requests return an error. Custom apps are excluded. Ask the developers of the public apps you depend on whether they have migrated, and run an app audit to cancel the ones nobody uses.
Theme
Updates to Theme Store themes are free, but code edits can turn an update into paid work. Shopify's help page on updating themes says theme editor customisations are copied to the new version, and code edits are included only if they do not conflict with the update. When they conflict, the theme card reads Theme added: code edits could not be included, and someone has to copy the changes across by hand. Uploaded themes, including ones from outside designers, get no automatic updates at all.
The more a theme has been edited in code, the more each update costs in developer hours. That is a reason to keep custom work in sections and blocks, and to keep a written list of every code change.
Developer time is the line quotes disagree on
Developer time is what you pay a person or a team to keep the store working and changing. It covers five kinds of work, and a useful quote prices each one.
- Fixes. Something broke: a variant picker, a cart drawer, a tracking tag, a layout on one phone size. How fast these must be fixed depends on whether they block sales, which we cover in how fast bug fixes should turn around.
- Changes. New sections, landing pages, filters, size charts, product page changes that the theme editor cannot do.
- Sale preparation. Testing, freezes and on-call cover around launches, Diwali and Black Friday.
- Platform upkeep. Theme updates, app replacements, and upgrades for any custom integration. Shopify's API versioning docs say a new API version ships every three months and each stable version is supported for at least 12 months, so every custom integration needs a version upgrade at least once a year.
- Watching. Speed, Core Web Vitals, checkout errors and analytics, checked on a schedule so regressions are caught before customers find them.
Two stores on the same plan can need very different amounts of each. A store with a stock theme, a few apps and one sale a year needs little developer time. A store with a custom theme, an ERP or warehouse integration and weekly drops needs someone on it most weeks.
How to estimate the hours your store needs
Estimate developer hours from what your store actually asked for, not from a package tier. Three months of history is enough to see the pattern.
- Collect every technical request from the last three months: WhatsApp messages, emails, tickets and notes from calls.
- Tag each one as a fix, a change, sale preparation or platform upkeep.
- Remove the work your own team can do in the admin and theme editor, such as banners, product edits, discount codes and menu changes. Paying developer rates for these is avoidable.
- Send the remaining list to two or three developers or agencies and ask each for an hour estimate per item.
- Divide each total by three for a monthly baseline. Add sale months on top, because they cost more than an average month.
- Add a yearly allowance for upkeep: one API version upgrade for each custom integration and the next theme update.
Your monthly developer cost is those hours times the rate each provider quotes. Comparing quotes against the same list is the only fair comparison, because it shows you whose hours are realistic and whose rate only looks low.
Hourly, a block of hours or a monthly retainer
Pick the pricing model that matches how often your store changes. Hourly suits rare work, a block of hours suits regular but uneven work, and a monthly retainer suits stores that change every week or cannot afford slow fixes.
| Model | How you pay | Suits | Check before signing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hourly or per task | Each job, after it is quoted | A stable store with occasional changes | Nobody is watching the store between jobs, and urgent fixes wait for availability |
| Block of hours | A set number of hours, paid in advance | Regular work that varies month to month | Whether unused hours roll over, when they expire, and the rate once the block runs out |
| Monthly retainer | A fixed fee for a defined scope | Weekly changes, frequent sales, revenue that cannot wait on fixes | What is out of scope, the response time in hours, and who answers outside office hours |
A retainer costs more per month than occasional hourly work, and what it buys is attention and a response-time commitment. Our guide on what a maintenance retainer should include covers the scope questions in detail.
What an in-house Shopify developer costs in India
An in-house hire makes sense once one person would be busy full time on your store. Below that, you pay for idle hours and still have no cover when they are on leave.
Flexiple's salary data, updated in August 2026 from 4,979 records, puts the median annual CTC of a Shopify developer in India at ₹7.9 lakh, about ₹66,000 a month. By experience, the medians are ₹4.4 lakh for 0 to 2 years, ₹7.1 lakh for 2 to 5 years and ₹11 lakh for 5 to 8 years. A developer with 2 to 5 years of experience therefore costs about ₹59,000 a month, and one with 5 to 8 years about ₹92,000, before recruitment, a laptop, paid tools and the time it takes them to learn your store.
The larger cost is coverage. One hire brings one skill set and one set of working hours. Speed work, app integrations, design changes and analytics rarely sit in one person, and a sale that goes wrong on their day off waits until they are back. Compare the monthly salary with your estimated hours times an outside rate, and add what a missed fix during a sale would cost you.
What to check in a maintenance quote
A good maintenance quote names the scope, the hours and the response time in numbers. Before you sign, check each of these.
- Scope by type of work. Fixes, changes, sale preparation and upkeep, each either included or priced.
- Response time in hours. For sales-blocking issues, on working days and outside them.
- Who answers. A developer who can open the code, or someone who passes the message on.
- Hours and rollover. How many hours are included, what happens to unused ones, and the rate beyond them.
- No platform charges. Strike out hosting, SSL, server monitoring and core updates.
- Backups. Shopify's help page on duplicating and downloading themes notes that a theme download does not include products, collections, menus, pages, blog posts or images. Ask how store data is backed up, and whether a backup app is in the budget.
- Access and exit. Work done through a collaborator account, removed cleanly at the end. Our guide on giving a developer access safely shows how.
- GST. Whether the quoted figure is before or after GST, and that you will receive a GST invoice.
We run maintenance retainers for D2C brands on Shopify. Miduty began as a one-time project and has stayed on retainer for 3.5 years, and our average reply on working days is 11 minutes. Our Shopify maintenance page describes how we work. If you want a quote built from your own request history, you can send it through our contact page.
Questions
How much does Shopify maintenance cost per month in India?
Add four lines. The plan costs ₹1,499, ₹5,599 or ₹22,680 a month on yearly billing for Basic, Grow and Advanced. Shopify adds 2%, 1% or 0.6% on prepaid gateway orders. Apps are billed separately. Developer time depends on how much your store changes. Published figures for developer maintenance disagree widely, from ₹2,000 a month in one Indian price guide to $1,500 or more in Shopify's own article, so estimate your hours from the last three months of requests and price that list with two or three providers.
What is included in Shopify maintenance?
Five kinds of work: fixing what breaks, making changes the theme editor cannot, preparing for sales, platform upkeep such as theme updates and API version upgrades for custom integrations, and watching speed, checkout errors and analytics. Hosting, SSL and PCI compliance are part of the Shopify plan, so they should not appear in a maintenance quote.
Do I need to pay for hosting and security on Shopify?
No. Shopify states that hosting on its platform includes unlimited bandwidth, Level 1 PCI compliance and an SSL certificate. Server patching, SSL renewal and core software updates are Shopify's job. A maintenance quote that charges for them was written for WordPress or WooCommerce. Your store's own security, such as staff permissions and app access, is still yours to manage.
How much does it cost to run a store on Shopify?
The plan price plus Shopify's fee on prepaid orders, the gateway's fee, your apps and any developer time. A store on Grow, billed yearly, with ₹5 lakh of prepaid sales a month pays ₹5,599 for the plan and ₹5,000 in Shopify fees, before the gateway charge, apps and maintenance. Cash on delivery orders carry no Shopify transaction fee.
Is a Shopify maintenance package worth it for a small store?
Only if the store changes often or downtime would cost real sales. A small store on a stock theme with few apps and occasional changes is usually better served by paying per task. Move to a block of hours or a retainer once requests arrive every week, you run regular sales, or a broken cart would cost more in a day than a month of maintenance.
Should I hire an in-house Shopify developer or outsource maintenance?
Hire in-house once one developer would be fully occupied on your store. Flexiple's August 2026 data puts the median CTC of a Shopify developer in India at ₹7.9 lakh a year, about ₹66,000 a month, before recruitment and tools. Below full-time workload, outsourcing costs less and gives you cover for leave, sales and skills one person does not have.
Why do Shopify maintenance quotes vary so much?
Because they price different amounts of work under the same name. One quote may cover a few hours of fixes, another weekly changes, sale cover and a response-time commitment. Some include WordPress-style items Shopify already handles. Send every provider the same list of last quarter's requests and compare their hour estimates and rates line by line.
